Move, Mountain!

Reading: “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” — Matthew 17:20 (NLT)

Observations: In this year’s trip to the Sierras I saw many of the mountains that make up that glorious range. As I drove up Highway 395, the massive ridges rose up to my west. When we got to Bishop we turned toward them and drove into the range, camped at North Lake to acclimate to the altitude, and two days later strapped on our packs, and hiked over Paiute Pass. Anyone would feel puny walking among enormous mountains.

It is not mountainous faith that Jesus is talking about here. He is talking about only a little faith in an enormous God. He is the God who created us, and created the mountains, the whole earth, and the complexity and variety of the entire universe. Jesus is telling us that it is a little faith in the enormous God that can move mountains, a little faith in God that heals the sick, a little faith in Him that causes the blind to see, the lame to walk, and the oppressed to be set free. Such mountains as these are within the power of the only One, true, living God.

Prayer: Father, enable my faith today. Inhabit it with Your power, to truly know You, to be alert to Your will, and to obey Your compulsion to do the work You have for me. No mountain is too great for You, Father. No situation is too dire for You. No person is beyond Your reach. Help me to see people as You see them—filled with potential for Kingdom impact and for wholeness. Lord Jesus, You tell me that nothing will be impossible for me if I have a little faith. Help my faith!

Exercise: Pray. Nothing is impossible when placed before the King and Creator who is present right now, who is all-powerful, who knows everything, and who loves you.
