Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27

In His final teachings to his disciples, Jesus speaks to them about love, unity, His oneness with the Father, the hope we have in the kingdom to come, and peace. His peace is different from the peace of this world in that His is not under the circumstances: It is above them and in spite of them and regardless of them. When hardships come, my inclination is to fall back to my old ways of dealing with them, as if an emotional and worrisome response will accomplish something, when all it accomplishes is panic or harm; and in those circumstances I am inclined to self-pity, self-recrimination, and fear. But that is not the way of Jesus. His is the way of peace, hope, love, joy, and courage. And unlike the gifts of this world, His are not temporary or revocable. His gifts are permanent and eternal, as He is. All I must do is keep in step with His Spirit to receive them.

Father, help me to seek the Spirit’s work within me when trouble or hardship comes, or even when success or remedy comes. In all circumstances give me peace, the deep assurance that You, God, are in charge of my life and welfare, and the lives and welfare of my family, my loved ones, and all the others who are my responsibility. Help me, Lord, to keep in step with Your Spirit, and give me courage that can only come from knowing Your great power, and Your love for me, and Your vigilance in watching over me.

Only God, who loves you, has power over you and your life, and all things are in His hands. Be at peace in His Spirit.
